Camps de Luca: In Memory of the Place de la Madeleine

Camps de Luca is one of those tailors which The Rake holds in particularly high regard. It sits alongside perhaps only a handful of other great tailoring establishments that can claim to be some of the most technically astute tailors in Europe (if not the world), and it bears all the hallmarks of a thorough-bred bespoke establishment; a compelling history, a generational family business and an immaculate attention to detail and craft.

Indeed, the house is about to make another important step in its history, as Camps de Luca is leaving it’s ancestral Parisian home at 11, Place de la Madeleine, to move to new premises at 16, Rue de la Paix. In recognition of this fact, the house has produced a touching short film celebrating the de Luca connection with their former workshop, a film which recognises the much overlooked affinity that often exists between a sense of place and the identity of a tailor’s work. The grandeur and old-school Parisian chic of the Place de la Madeleine somehow seems to reflect the glamorous, timeless personality of a de Luca suit, just as the workshop itself has inevitably taken on its own character through decades of the tailors’ attention.

A poignant parting though this undoubtedly is, The Rake has no doubt that this move to the Rue de la Paix will mark the start of a no less exciting and successful time for Camps de Luca, and an equally exciting new chapter for Parisian tailoring at large.
